Membranes for sustainable energy

Hydrogen is enjoying global attention because of its potential role in transitions to clean energy. Evonik is making an important contribution to the sustainable gas industry with innovative membrane technologies for the production of green hydrogen and efficient hydrogen recovery. Under the brand name DURAION®, Evonik has developed a membrane that enables the cost-efficient production of green hydrogen using alkaline membrane water electrolysis (AEM electrolysis). The SEPURAN® Noble gas separation membrane also favors the transport of hydrogen in existing natural gas pipelines by enabling plant operators to extract hydrogen from hydrogen/natural gas mixtures.

Better than the real thing

From handbags and shoes to clothing and car seats, polyurethane-based artificial leather offers a high-quality alternative to genuine leather and is becoming a trend as vegan leather. Unfortunately, however, more than 90 percent of artificial leather is still manufactured using solvents with a negative impact on the environment.

Technologies based on aqueous polyurethane dispersions enable a more environmentally friendly production process. Evonik is a pioneer in developing these new technologies and is supporting the transformation of the artificial leather industry with a range of products such as VESTANAT® and the ORTEGOL® P series. Together with other key stakeholders, Evonik is making artificial leather, a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to leather.

Sustainable mattresses for sweeter dreams

Every year 40 million mattresses are discarded in Europe alone, which is equivalent to around 600 kilotons of waste. However, only a small number of these will be recycled.

More than half of the generated waste is polyurethane (PU) foam, so as a polyurethane additives manufacturer, Evonik has utilized its expertise in polyurethane chemistry to develop a process to recycle the main components used in flexible PU foams. Evonik’s process also enables the recovery of polyol raw material from PU mattresses comparable in quality to the virgin polyol.

Evonik’s solution will make a significant contribution to the global flexible PU industry’s sustainability expectations and supports the entire Evonik Group’s objectives of establishing a fully functioning circular economy.

Adhesives made from orange peel

Adhesives are everywhere in everyday life—whether in cars, hygiene products, packaging, or furniture. Baby diapers are a good example of the high demand placed on adhesives: diapers must be kind to the skin while remaining stable when worn. Diapers consist of up to five layers held together by thin layers of adhesive.

Evonik’s product VESTOPLAST® is ideal for formulating high-quality hotmelt adhesives because it meets the demanding requirements of diaper production and is also low-odor and additive-free.

Evonik is now taking the next step with VESTOPLAST® eCO, which is ISCC PLUS certified and produced according to a mass balance process. Raw materials for VESTOPLAST® were previously fossil-based, but now VESTOPLAST® eCO uses raw materials produced from sustainable sources such as organic waste like orange peelings, nutshells, or cooking fat.

Lipids in the fight against the pandemic

In spring 2021, Evonik played a key role in accelerating the production of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. Months ahead of schedule, Evonik supplied BioNTech with the lipids that were urgently needed for the mRNA-based vaccine.

This important contribution to the fight against the corornavirus pandemic was only possible thanks to outstanding cross-functional collaboration of more than 150 Evonik employees from Research & Development, Technical Service, Quality Assurance and Quality Control. In just three months, new processes and analytical methods were developed and production equipment for lipid production was set up in Hanau and Dossenheim. We achieved this all while maintaining the highest quality standards.

In the future, mRNA technology will also play an important role in the treatment of other diseases such as cancer and other infectious diseases. Evonik embraces the future of mRNA technology as a strong and reliable partner.
